Quote:
For most of the history of the language, English speakers took a lackadaisical approach to spelling; the notion that a word should always be spelled the same way is a much more recent invention than the language itself. The standardization of English spelling began in the 16th century, and although it is unclear at exactly what point our spelling became set, what is certain is that ever since it happened, people have complained that the rules of spelling, such as they are, just don’t make sense.

I will be the first one to tell you that the English Language does not make much sense at all. I feel like it should be easier to compose sentences without being grammatically incorrect. On the other hand, I don’t feel like we need to start teaching “text” language as a primary language. Yes, there are some exceptions like not hyphenating a word or making two words like dog house into doghouse. Personally I spell everything out and put comas where needed, but when I text I rarely put apostrophes. People text acronyms and abbreviate words to save their selves time. I like that Naomi Baron said that the number of “textisms” will decrease as technology moves forward and develops better keypads for texting.

Texting is becoming a new language and more people need to become familiar with it. It's the future. As time goes on it will only seem like second nature to everyone. Good post.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you the english language is difficult but I feel like if we change it our society will feel dumbed down and students won't learn as much as they are now. Since our language is the hardest one to learn it shows that we are further developed in that one aspect of the world.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you text language should not be a primary language to teach. And the english language is hard to understand sometimes, but its something everyone needs to learn.
ReplyDeleteI like that you said you make an effort to use proper grammar while texting! I do as well, and I feel that if more people did, we could do away with the majority of the lingo and people would improve their vocabulary, spelling, and grammar as a result. Good post!
