DEJ #12

Quote- "The need to understand a new language of expression. The way we are educating is based on nineteenth-century ideas and methods. Here we are, entering the twenty-first century, and you look at our schools and ask, 'Why are we doing things in this ancient way?' Our system of education is locked in a time capsule. You want to say to the people in charge, 'You're not using today's tools! Wake up!"

Reaction- This statement is so true and I agree with it in so many ways. Schools are still teaching in ways that are basically irrelevant and obsolete when it comes to the world that we live in today. It seems silly to not use the tools that can be provided today. He talks about how it is still important to learn about the writen and spoken word, but it is also crutial to learn about music and graphics. I feel like this guy is reading my mind when it comes to the integration of technology into the schools. Integrating visual literacy into schools will be so crutial and will provide kids with the alternative way of learning they need to be a student in this day and age. This article really put my ideas in better words.

  1. Andrew, one of the reasons we are locked into old ways is we have too many educators unwilling to adapt to change. One of the things needed to reform education is to hire teachers who are innovative, self-motivated learners, and willing to adapt to the changing world and the ways that we communicate. Don't get me wrong, there are many veteran teachers paving the way despite resistence and lack of support. We need to make room for new educators who are adaptable and technologically proficient to join with those savvy veteran educators.

  2. I agree. Most teachers are still teaching by the book. I think that they need to get with the new technology and kick their old habits1
