"Education Needs a Digital Upgrade"

Quote: "When we criticize students for making digital videos instead of reading “Gravity’s Rainbow,” or squabbling on Politico.com instead of watching “The Candidate,” we are blinding ourselves to the world as it is. And then we’re punishing students for our blindness."

Reaction:
My reaction to this particular statement is that I agree with the fact that schools are oblivious to change in today’s society. I believe that schools should be focusing more on technology, because that is the future. The fact that schools enforce the “no cell phone” policy is not accurate with today’s society. Studies show that 65 percent of grade school kids will end up working for a job that doesn’t exist today, which entitles that schools are teaching kids material that will be irrelevant to their future. School systems need to open their eyes and realize that technology is moving forward everyday and instead of pushing it away, they should embrace the gift of technology and use it to their advantage.

  2. Andrew,
The only thing missing is your related resource to the required article, "Education Needs an Upgrade", find a video, link, website, etc... that is related to this article and post in your blog.
Thanks! I will allow some time on Tuesday to make corrections before grading.

  3. I love how you described technology as a "gift"! I completely agree that if we aren't using all the resources available to us to teach students then we aren't doing a very good job. Teachers should extend their learning beyond the paper and pen and use technology to help students who may need different mediums of instruction to learn. Great Job!

  4. Agreed! i disagree with the policy of no cell phones in classrooms. In todays society everyone has cell phones and use them for everything. Although cell phones are sometimes neglected and used for harm they can be useful learning tool

  5. Andrew,
You are completely correct with schools not realizing they need to move foward with technology. Just teaching like they have for the past 30 years are not going to help students in the future with much more advance ways. Like you said they are teaching students that will have jobs that don't exist yet, they need to realize that while teaching them.

  6. I like that you are positive about technology in the schools but i disagree with you on the "no cell phone policy." It becomes a distraction in the class room environment. I watch students in class here at Fairmont State, texting and not listening to the lectures or showing the respect the Professors deserve. It also becomes a distraction for the other students in the class.
